about

UJIKOEN, a long-established Japanese tea company in Kyoto, has released "SUGAI KEN / Be Sure to Listen to This at Japanese Teatime" as the eighth in its "Tealightsound" series.
This series, which presents a richly colored and resonant experience of Japanese tea through the integration of Japanese tea, sound, and light, has been released every year in conjunction with the anniversary of the company's founding by "reliable" artists.
This time, the work by SUGAI KEN is a departure from the easy BGM of Japanese tea that abounds in the market, with songs inspired by the soil of a Japanese tea plantation and the quiet madness of Japanese teatime, Electrification of the cries of mysterious creatures living in abandoned tea fields, and the magical modification of a famous sentence by Juko Murata(Legendary Japanese Tea Master), and so on.
The artwork is by art unit HAMADARAKA and designer Akira Sasaki, and the mastering is by Makoto Oshiro.

For your information, here are the descriptions of some of the main tracks.

1.A Mysterious Voice Echoing in the Mountain Forest at Dawn, Reproduced with Electronic Sounds
→When I actually went to an abandoned Japanese-tea plantation in the mountains of Kyoto in the early morning, I heard the cry of a mysterious creature (perhaps a bird?) echoing in the mountains. This is an electronic sound reproduction of that voice. The background environmental sound was recorded at the site.

4.Dawn
→These are environmental sounds recorded at a Japanese tea plantation, also abandoned. As dawn began to break, I began to hear the cries of birds, and the experience was like looking into a galaxy of ecosystems.

5.Cha to Kehai (Are you high purity?)
→This is a track that expresses the quiet madness of drinking sencha(Japanese-tea). I tried to create a sound image that cannot be heard unless you strain your ears. It's an image of the air that surrounds you when you drink sencha.

9.Sediment
→A sound that imitates Holophonics (the vertical movement of sound) has been added. Please use headphones!

10.Mifunorokoko
→If you play this song backwards, Murata Juko(Legendary Japanese-Tea Master)'s famous sentence "Kokoro no Fumi" will appear...
